Going to the dentist is probably one of the most hated experiences by most people. And the worst part about going to a dentist is that you start going at a very young age, pretty much as soon as you get your first teeth. There’s no point in your life, really, where you can remember not being tortured by that man with the sharp instrument, poking it into your mouth and ripping your teeth apart with it. okay, it’s not quite that bad, but it’s certainly not a pleasant experience. The truth is, very little about a dentist visit is pleasant.

For starters, there’s that stupid sheet that he wraps around our neck. If he made it any tighter he’d probably cut off our air supply. sure, he does this so we don’t drool all over ourselves, but the least he can do it loosen it just a little. It’s not bad enough that the dentist chair itself with that neck brace is so uncomfortable. Talk about leaving the dentist’s office with a stiff neck.

Then comes the x-rays. Now let’s face it, this can’t be the safest thing in the world. I mean he puts this lead covering over our chest and then leaves the room when he puts on the x-ray machine. And that’s not even the uncomfortable part. The worst part of the x-rays is when he takes the film, which is twice the size of our mouth to begin with and he then attempts to jam it into one corner of our mouth while attached to these metal tongs that are heavier than a box of screwdrivers. And we’re supposed to hold that thing in our mouth without holding it with our hands? is he on drugs? And then, we have to go through about 4 of these things, 8 when he has to do a full set every 4 or 6 years.

Then after the x-rays, he sticks that thing in our mouth that sucks up the saliva. Feels like we’re having our insides sucked out of us. And then, if that’s not bad enough, while he’s got that thing in our mouth and digging at our teeth with the metal hook, he begins to ask us things like, So, have you done any fishing lately? what does he possibly expect to get out of us when we’ve got all that garbage in our mouth? But like idiots we try to answer him and end up drooling down our chin. The little bib doesn’t help very much.

Then after he’s done digging at our teeth for a while and we rinse all this blood out of our mouth, (that can’t be good) the next thing he does is brush our teeth with this stuff that could take the chrome off a car bumper. The goal is to clean our teeth, not remove them completely.

And then, after it’s all over, he hands us this bill for $118. all he did was take a few x-rays, pick at our teeth and brush them and we get hit with a bill that’s 5 times what it would cost us to get an oil change for our car.

And dentists wonder why we hate going there.

If you are inclined to treat your supposed yeast infection without advice from your doctor, be sure you are aware of all the variables you must consider. you may not be aware of a better treatment method that has been developed for one of the various contingencies you have overlooked. If there are no other health concerns or obstacles, then oral thrush is pretty straightforward to treat. you or your child might find it painful to drink anything or eat normal foods while battling a case of oral thrush. This can be a major concern. as a result, you or your child can easily become dehydrated. call your doctor immediately if you are having a problem getting adequate water into your body. Fluid resuscitation may be necessary or he may change your treatment plan.

If you or your child has had a yeast infection you most likely treated it correctly at the time. however, if the infection returns, there are preventative steps that you can follow this time so it doesn’t return in the future. one common sense measure is to make sure you properly wash and sterilize anything – clothes, toys, etc. – that your child may have put in his or her mouth while experiencing oral thrush. your nipples and breast area are susceptible to developing a yeast infection if you are breastfeeding a baby with oral thrush. Check this area carefully each day. The ideal course is to speak with your doctor about the overall situation to receive comprehensive and accurate information. it seems that the more you try to educate yourself about the various treatments and symptoms of yeast infections, the more you come to realize that it’s a lot more complicated than it appears. we only bring this up because we have seen that treatments vary so much. some are an one-time pill that clears your infection up in a week and other treatments last a long time and don’t respond quickly to the treatment. Bacterial vaginosis and Trichomonas vaginalis have similar symptoms to Candidiasis vaginitis, but are entirely different. these are the main reasons we believe it is not wise to diagnose your yeast infection.

Types of Cataracts

Nuclear Cataracts

In time the lens turns yellow and clouds visions. some of the symptoms: seeing double or multiple images and difficulty distinguishing between shades of a color.

Cortical Cataracts

A cortical cataract begins as a whitish, wedge-shaped opacities or streaks on the outer edge of the cortex. As it progresses, the streaks reach the center and interfere with light going through the center of the lens. Symptom: problems with glare.

Subcapsular cataracts

A posterior subcapsular cataract starts as a small opaque area, which usually forms behind the lens, in the path of light going into the retinal. Symptoms: interferes with reading, reduces vision in bright lights, and causes either glare or halos around lights at night.

Causes

Cataracts develop for a variety of reasons. It can develop in one or both eyes. As you age the lenses in your eyes become less flexible, less transparent and thicker. Age-related changes cause tissues to break down and clump together clouding areas of the eye.

Other causes diabetes, alcohol consumption, excessive exposure to sunlight, exposure to ionizing radiation the type used in x-rays and cancer radiation therapy, a family history of cataracts, high blood pressure, obesity, eye injury or inflammation, prolonged use of corticosteroid medications, and smoking.

Prevention

Probably the biggest cause is lifestyle. a University of Wisconsin-Madison survey of more than 18,000 women found those with the lowest consumption of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains had the highest risk of developing cataracts.

Antioxidant vitamins and phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables such as a, C, and E, lutein, and zeaxanhin can reduce the incident of cataracts. The consumption of fish a rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids also has been associated with a reduced risk of cataracts.

In a study published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science in June 2010, researchers in Australia found that a diet high in carbohydrates may increase cataract risk. looking at the eating habits of more than 1,600 adults revealed that individuals who were in the top 25 percent for total carbohydrate intake had more than three times the risk to develop cataracts than those in the lowest 25 percent for carbohydrate intake.

Reversal

Besides slowing down the progression of cataracts a diet high in antioxidants can reverse the process. The largest part of the standard American diet is processed foods. this means simple carbs and lots of sugar make up the largest portion of the diet. both of these rob the body of vitamins and minerals. Eyes depend on nutrients just like every other system.

In another study of 2,400 plus older adults in Australia published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in June 2008 found that high intakes of antioxidants reduced the incident of cataracts. to prevent and reverse cataracts, you need to increase alkalinity. a cataract can dissolve on its own. Women who had a higher intake of lutein and zeaxanthin, which are found in yellow or dark leafy vegetables had a lower risk for forming cataracts. this is reported in one of Jama/Archive journals.

Based on the idea that cataract formation happens because reactive oxygen is capable of damaging the lens proteins and antioxidants can protect against this process, it would seem that cataracts are in a large part lifestyle dependent.

The scientific community continues its heated debate about the terrorism risks and health benefits of publishing avian flu research as concerns about bird flu have emerged from Vietnam and Australia. even in the event of a flu pandemic mirroring the deadly 1918 outbreak, U.S. life and health insurers would survive a financial hit of at least a couple hundred billion dollars, and many businesses have adequate continuity plans in place, experts said.

Scientists are not warning that a pandemic is imminent, but they continually conduct research to improve their understanding of avian flu.

The World Health Organization does not even consider the deadly H5N1 strain — which emerged in 1997 — an increased risk to public health, since viruses continually evolve. the strain, which is most common in Asia and Africa, has been held in check by the fact it is not transmittable among humans. a person contracts it by handling or consuming infected poultry. Since 2003, 344 people of the 583 with confirmed cases of this bird flu have died, WHO reports.

In January, two people in Vietnam died within a few weeks of each after coming in contact with contaminated poultry. the victims were 18 and 26 years old. Late in the month, officials in Australia killed 24,000 ducks in an effort to halt an outbreak of a less virulent bird flu strain that has resulted in various restrictions on the country’s poultry exports.

But since viruses naturally mutate, scientists are concerned that H5N1 could become contagious among humans. To understand this risk and provide scientists potentially vital public health information, researchers in the United States and the Netherlands have used ferrets — a common model of human influenza infection — to create H5N1 strains that are communicable among mammals. the Dutch strain is lethal, but the U.S. strain is not, according to comments by the researchers in Science magazine.

The publication, along with Nature magazine, had been set to publish bird flu studies recently. But under pressure from the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, both magazines delayed publishing the studies until they are redacted so terrorists cannot use them as blueprints for bio weapons.

In published comments, the researchers bemoan that the redactions will not derail terrorists but could make the world less safe by preventing other scientists from building on their work. the researchers and others worldwide, though, voluntarily have suspended their work involving engineered bird flu strains until the end of March to re-examine the potential benefits and risks of their research.

Meanwhile, the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity is examining other ways to disseminate the redacted material to scientists. In an interview, Acting Chair Paul Keim disputed that any information from the redacted material would be a significant value to scientists.

Keim predicted that the conclusions scientists could draw from the research would stimulate other research and new treatments and vaccines. "That is good," he wrote in an email.

However, "this information will not be immediately useful for their development," said Keim, who is also the division director of the Pathogen Genomics Translational Genomics Research Institute at Northern Arizona University.

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where the U.S. research was conducted, research compliance specialist Rebecca Moritz said that the institution’s lab is secured against the engineered flu strain escaping, worker infection or criminal acts. a response plan anticipates both natural and man-made disasters and all security measures are in accordance with federal requirements, Moritz said.

"Risk for this and other types of research is never zero, but the detailed procedures and plans in place are designed to keep it to an absolute minimum," Moritz wrote in an email response.

In a pandemic comparable to the worst influenza outbreak of the past century — the Spanish flu pandemic, which killed up to 100 million people worldwide from 1918 to 1920 — about 100 million U.S. citizens would be infected, estimated economist Steven N. Weisbart.

Millions would die, and life insurers would face $155 billion to $200 billion of death claims, estimated Weisbart, senior vice president and chief economist at the Insurance Information Institute.

About 10 million would require hospitalization, but those numbers would overwhelm the hospital system and compel public officials to turn sports arenas and other large facilities into huge sick wards, he said.

The federal government initially would bear much of the cost of treating the masses but could be expected to recover from health insurers through a mechanism such as a profits tax, Weisbart said. he envisioned the tax would tap insurers for the coverage they would have provided if the sick had been able to obtain traditional care.

Weisbart said he could not estimate how large a financial hit health insurers would take, because he could not project how the government would calculate the cost of "treating people in Giants Stadium." he also said that health insurers likely would likely bear the cost of administering a vaccine if one were developed in time.

Life and health insurers would survive, Weisbart said, but added that a worse outbreak that could cripple insurers is still possible.

Since the mid-2000s, businesses have been developing continuity plans that would help them survive a crisis affecting their workforce and customers, said Carol Fox, the Cincinnati-based director of the Strategic and Enterprise Risk Practice at the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc.

For example, because a flu outbreak could move across the country by region, companies have plans in place to switch production to currently unaffected areas. Meanwhile, the dropoff in customer foot traffic could be addressed through the online ordering options companies have implemented.

Some businesses, though, may decide their best course is to not take any measures, Fox said. If those businesses are in the slowest part of their fiscal year, then the cost of reacting might not be worth the amount of business it would save, she said.

A clinic that offered free thyroid examines closed with out notice. one patient had a scheduled follow-up appointment Monday but found the doors looked an the office cleaned out.

Mary Ann Borgeson said that it looked like operators of Symphony Wellness at 135th and West Center in Omaha just vanished. Borgeson said, “I had blood work results coming back and they had my insurance information. where are my medical records?”

The Douglas County Commissioner didn’t think it was very professional for the chiropractor and medical doctor at the clinic to close over the weekend without calling her.

The office phone message implies the doctors are seeing patients. so Fact Finders sent an e-mail through the clinic website.

Chiropractor Shaun Connley replied with an e-mail statement. He said, “Not a single patient was or will be billed or asked to pay for blood work or medical services.” He said a partner backed out so financial problems arose early on. Connley said “As I scrambled to get back rent paid my RN quit and without notice, my MD quit.”

Connley said the clinic had only five patients and each patient chart is being held safely. He said a letter will be going out to patients explaining what happened and referral options.

The 2011 results of the  Fiat-Chrysler Group presented today did not dissapoint with a majority of increased profits, with the U.S. being a major force. as expected Europe showed a worse performance, but Fiat Industrial SpA did well above all expectations thanks to a strong CNH Global. The Chrysler Group owned by Fiat SpA was the star of last year with the first net profits in more than a decade, and Fiat Automóveis (Brazil) is also a strong part of the Group thanks to ever increasing product development. Without a doubt then more positive results than negative.

Fiat SpA presented a net profit of €1.65 billion (Chrysler included from June onwards): an increase of €1.43 billion compared to 2010. that is more than analysts s expected: they expected no more than €1.52 billion net profit. The collaboration Fiat-Chrysler already proved to be a succesful one in Q4 when net profits more than doubled to €765 million . Without the U.S. counterpart though, FGA would only present €126 million in the same period (it was €319 million in Q4, 2010). that had to do with the general trend in Europe of plumbing car sales, especially in Italy.

Fiat Industrial SpA presented impressive figures with a net profit almost doubled of €701 million against €378 million in 2010. Markets responded positively in reaction to those figures. Iveco, CNH and Fiat Powertrain (FPT) had a turnover of 24.3 billion in 2011 and that is an increase of 13.8%. CNH showed a huge turnover of 13.9 billion (+16.7%), Iveco 9,6 billion(+15,1%) and  FPT showed the biggest increase of all: +33,3% with a total of 3.2 billion. in these difficult economic condtions an impressive achievement.

CEO Sergio Marchionne was proud but insisted Fiat-Chrysler still has to pay attention to uncertain market conditions if they want to hold on to their annual objectives.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Four-year-old Blair is about to lose her first tooth. Her parents have chosen to put it in a deep freeze that may help her one day.

They are following the advice of health care professionals who promote saving children’s teeth in order to harvest stem cells if a future emergency calls for it.

North Hollywood Dentist Nina Gray is a local health authority who promotes the service.

A company called Store-A-Tooth is offering to keep children’s teeth on reserve.

Dr. Peter Verlander, of Store-A-Tooth, said the stored stem cells could one day be used to treat a number of serious diseases, like Leukemia, diabetes and neurological disease.

The company charges $649 to collect and process the extracted teeth and an additional $120 per year to keep them frozen in a lab.

Stem cell researcher Dr. John Kessler said companies like this are praying on the fears of parents.

The technology is in the early stages of development. Researchers say that there could be hope for older kids and adults to extract and harvest their wisdom teeth, with attached blood supply, to be frozen for later use.

Tinnitus is commonly defined as a ringing in the ears with no external source. In fact, tinnitus is the literally Latin word for ringing, but there is much more to the condition. Tinnitus symptoms can show up as hissing, roaring, or buzzing in the ears as well, and it can range from being a minor annoyance to being painful.

There are some tinnitus causes that are more common than others. the most common cause is an exposure to loud noises. others include ear infections, age-related hearing loss, and wax build-up in the ears. Tinnitus is very common all over the world. according to ATA (American Tinnitus Association) there are up to 50 million people in the USA alone who suffer from tinnitus symptoms.

Two Types of Tinnitus – Objective and Subjective

In cases of objective tinnitus the researcher can actually detect a sound coming from the ear of the person. In some cases this is a pulse-beat (pulsatile tinnitus) or muscle spasm and can sometimes be corrected with surgery.

Subjective tinnitus has no external cause and therefore the noise cannot be detected externally by a doctor. this does not mean that there is no solution. the causes can range from the previously mentioned infections and allergies to the buildup of earwax, and those can all be solved with medical treatment.

Does Tinnitus Affect to the Quality of Life?

While it is not normally an indication of a serious underlying problem the condition can cause sleeplessness and anxiety, thus greatly reducing the tinnitus sufferer’s quality of life.

Treating Tinnitus

In the case of subjective tinnitus the condition can be rather hard to diagnose. this makes it also hard to treat. however, usually there is no need for any medical treatment. Also, the treatments are always individuals. What works to one patient doesn’t necessarily work to others.

The solutions that have previously worked in one case, may not work in another. Research has shown that ending the use of caffeine and cigarettes can, in some cases, help with tinnitus, and in other cases it can actually bring on the condition.

When it comes to drugs, one medication that has shown some positive effects in treating tinnitus is diazepam. however, it is always wise to look for natural solutions before resorting to any drugs.

There are many herbs that can also offer relieve to the sufferers. These include for example gingko biloba, black cohosh, rosemary, and cornus.

Masking the Ringing Sound

Masking tinnitus is one treatment option that has helped many patients. In this type of treatment the ringing in the ears is masked by some artificial sound. the sound can be generated, for example, using a white noise machine. Playing some background music can also be helpful.

Masking tinnitus is believed to train brains so that they eventually start to ignore the sound. the habituation of the brains is a key element of this type of tinnitus treatment. the goal is to get people focusing their attention away from the sound of tinnitus.

sometimes, she has trouble finding a parking spot. Other times, she can’t quite grab what she’s reaching for.

To an able-bodied person, these moments are nothing more than a slight inconvenience. But to people with disabilities, the lack of handicapped parking or soap dispensers placed too high on restroom walls can be time-consuming or unconquerable obstacles.

Those moments are becoming less frequent in the city of Starkville, Beth Anne Ellzey said.

“I’m blessed to be independent,” said Ellzey, who has used a wheelchair for more than 40 years. “And if it weren’t for some of the places here, I wouldn’t be able to do that.”

Ellzey, a member of Starkville’s Commission on Disability, said the city’s efforts to create more accessibility for disabled residents have grown each year since the commission began advising city leaders.

There are more curb cuts and ramps around town, but there’s also greater attention to detail, such as doorway thresholds and the torque needed to open a door.

But there’s always more to learn.

Thursday, the commission will host a workshop — 2010 ADA Standard for Accessible Design: Are you ready? — in the activities room at the Starkville Sportsplex on Lynn Lane. The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will feature a member of the U.S. Access Board, the leading federal agency that created the ADA guidelines used to write the new 2010 ADA standards. The cost is $35, which includes breakfast and lunch. continuing-education units from Mississippi State University will be provided for $20.

The commission is a board-appointed advisory group. it advises the city on compliance with federal and state disability laws, and provides assistance with identification of barriers to integration and participation of people with disabilities. The commission also provides information and assistance to community members.

Making progress

“Since the commission was formed in June 2006, the city of Starkville has become progressive when it comes to accessibility,” said Whitney Hilton, past chairwoman for the commission. “Within this six-year span, the city has completed the first four steps for city governments required by the ADA of 1990, designated an ADA coordinator, written a notice about ADA, created a grievance procedure and recently conducted a self-evaluation of city facilities.”
